Noise about IIM’s online CAT 2009 vs the Indian online exam products

Online examination was recently in the news due to the problems experienced by 1000s of candidates in the CAT December 2009 examination conducted by IIMs. This was the first online examination being conducted in India at this level. IIMs had selected a vendor who has years of experience conducting online examinations. So what went wrong?

This blog is not meant to answering this question. Frankly, I don’t have the answer to this question. I simply don’t know what went wrong. Whilst all concerned parties would be busy finding the real reasons and rectify the glitches for future tests, I am particularly concerned about the way Indian system looks for vendors that are outside of India and does not consider evaluating those within the country.  Unless an Indian vendor is given an opportunity to conduct an examination like CAT, they will never have a sufficiently experienced Indian vendor. The question is who will bell the cat.

One thing is certain. A product from an Indian vendor would not have given more trouble than the so called tried and tested product did. But a similar or even much less problematic Indian product would definitely have created a lot more noise and IIMs would have been criticized all over for the poor selection of the vendor and the product.

I know of one product that can today conduct CAT without problem. This product called “Web Exam” has been created by Web Access that supports all that CAT requires. The product has been tried and tested in Indian conditions, is being used by companies and is versatile.
