digiORB gets ABS certification

In today’s world one of the most serious concerns is the environment. And most countries have taken this extremely seriously with regard to the shipping industry. This has meant that more and more vessels are getting Detention, Deficiencies (PSC Inspections), NC’s and Fines for MARPOL and related non compliances such as the Oil Record Book. The result is that companies need to invest more time and efforts towards training.

Unfortunately, that is not always enough, since training is as much about the trainer as the trainee. And on many occasions the companies don’t have sufficient options on either. The other major issue in this regard is faced, by owners that have a significant percentage of their crew who are not proficient in English. Whilst their competency levels in all regards may be very high, sometimes this is lost during translation and whilst reproducing data in the Oil Record Book. To help reduce the problem of incorrect, improper, as well as missed entries, Web Access have developed a software, “digiORB”. This is a digital Oil Record Book and an aid to the ships officers in completing the Oil Record Book. This is in principle very similar to the "ORB Guidance Manual". In fact, it could be considered a "Digital Guidance Manual". To inspire confidence amongst potential users of the product, the same was sent to ABS for certification. And recently, ABS certified digiORB for use on board vessels. To quote them: “This program may be used by ship management, as a tool for assisting entries in Oil Record Book on board the vessel. It is certified for the following uses(s): A Tool for Vessel Oil Record Book in accordance with MARPOL 2006.”

The main Features of digiORB are:

   •  Automate calculations in entries
   •  Warnings for the unexpected ORB entries
   •  Checking and approval of correct entries by the Chief Executive/Chief Officer
   •  Electronic confirmation by the Master
   •  Maintains electronic backup
   •  Records can be forwarded to Ship Manager’s System
   •  Create entries that are copied into the official ORB

Several companies have requested for evaluation copies and arein the process of testing the software on board their vessels.
